From a teacher doubling as a school marshal in Texas to volunteers guiding children safely across busy streets in Hof, Germany, communities around the world are proving that guardian angels walk among us. Safe Life Defense's Guardian Angel Program donates free protective vests to first responders who serve as their communities' everyday protectors, while in Winnipeg, some 7,000 young school…

Affordable and Clean Energy

HESSEX

The Problem

2.4 billion people have no access to clean energy sources. Bottom of pyramid (BoP) consumers devote many hours to the daily collection of firewood while other sources such as charcoal and kerosene can cost up to $2-$3 a week out of a $7 family income. The indoor pollution created by dirty fuels kill more people every year than malaria. In addition to the health problems caused, these fuels are expensive in terms of monetary value, time and social cost. A clean energy alternative is...

Our Solution

Our solution to the problem of dirty fuels is a package made up of: (a) an off-the-shelf solar home system from an award winning solar manufacturer and (b) proprietary technology known in the form of a HEMS unity that allows bottom of the pyramid consumers to operate their solar home system by making regular small payments via their mobile phone (see diagram below). The proprietary technology is know as the Hessex Energy Management System (HEMS). The HEMS unit is integrated with the...

The Problem

Out of the 7 billion people on our planet, 1.4 billion still live in extreme poverty, meaning they have to survive on less than US$1.25 a day. Worldwide, 70% of those extreme poor live in rural areas (World Bank, 2012) – most of them in developing countries. Given the forecasts of a 50% increase in the population by 2050 (IFAD, 2011), of which the majority will be in developing countries, the fight against rural poverty can no longer be postponed. Poverty in rural areas has several causes. One...

Our Solution

Limited access to infrastructure like Internet or efficient transportation prevents improvements in the way business is conducted and subsequently in the standards of living for rural people. Rather than building roads or installing broadband access which takes decades before benefits can be reaped by those in need, the immense infrastructural hurdles are bypassed by working with what the people already know and use; mobile phones. As a matter of fact, according to CNN (2012) more people...
